A Tradition of Stones & Pebbles

Why do some people place a small stone or pebble on the monument when visiting the grave of a loved one or after an unveiling? It began as a Jewish tradition, but Rabbis can find no religious reason for this tradition. Rather, it is a comforting custom which developed hundreds of years ago. Some explanations for placing a pebble on a gravestone or monument include:

We are reminded of the presence of loved ones.

Many stones tells of many visitors, people who remember and people who care.

In ancient times, there were no monuments. A collection of stones was used to mark a burial place. Perhaps this began the concept of memorial stones used widely in cemeteries in current times. Each small stone can be seen as contributing to the making of a monument.

As the stones of the old days became scattered and dissipated, it was necessary to replace them to rebuild a marker.

When someone visiting a gravesite finds stones or pebbles placed upon the gravestone or monument, it gives them comfort to know that they are not alone in their grief and love.

Remembrance Stones carry the inscribed message, "Always In My Thoughts." They are constructed of a stone-like material that allows you to write a personal message on the back of the stone with a fine, felt-tip, permanent marker. This provides family and friends with a simple and meaningful way to express feelings for those who have passed on. For Jews, it is like placing a note between stones at the Western Wall. For all, it can feel like an opportunity to leave a love note to someone with whom you can no longer communicate in everyday life.

In the Jewish tradition, it is not customary to send flowers. Remembrance Stones are a perfect way to offer condolences

Remembrance Stonesare a just the right size and shape size for their special

task--and those who follow this tradition do not have to search the cemetery grounds to find an appropriate stone or pebble.

Stones are:

smooth-surfaced

clean

the right size

a size and shape that makes them wind-resistant and less likely to roll off a monument

a convenient size to carry in your pocket or in their own velveteen pouch

formulated with a blend of genuine stone and bonding agents that create a surface for writing an inscription.

Remembrance Stones™ are a unique way to personalize an age-old tradition by allowing the mourner to commemorate the visit with the date, a special message and a signature.
